On the way home from Ovid

I love small town weddings. JaNea and Shawn had their reception in Liberty, Idaho just north of Bear Lake on Saturday night. I look forward to getting out on the road and seeing new places, especially small towns like this. Without fail the guests arrive 30-45 minutes early and many of them stay the entire evening. Some of them have to get back to the farm. I love talking to the old farmers that show up. I talked with a guy whose grandpa (not great grandpa) was sent by Brigham Young to settle Ovid forever ago. If you get a chance take a drive this summer past Preston and then through Riverdale and take a right on Highway 36. It is beautiful in the summer and their are wild turkeys everywhere. It will take you right to Bear Lake.

This image was taken on the way home Saturday night. It is a 30 second exposure so you can begin to see that the stars visibly moved even in 30 seconds. I love the country! Click on the image to enlarge.

Grandpa Ford: 90 years of pure man

This is a tribute to my Grandpa Ford. He just turned 90 and I think everyone could benefit from hearing a little about him.

The following images are from a "field trip" we took around my grandpa's 150 acre farm. I mean really how many people have a grandpa that has a school bus. I do!! It is a full size, state of the art, yellow school bus. The conversation we had as we went around the farm may have seemed normal for a farmer just starting out but as my grandpa stopped and showed us how he would love to buy the adjacent 150 acre farm it shows you his mindset. He acts like he wants to expand operations when most people wouldn't dream of it.

Grandpa Ford is a beacon for me. He is someone who sees big and acts big. When so many people are so pessimistic he sees only opportunity. He had a TV iPOD before me, an iMac 24 inch, Nikon with video function and many more things way before me. He is cutting edge.

Last year he decided to create a lake on his property in a vacant gravel pit. He stocked it with 1000 trout and he and my grandma went out every morning in the canoe to feed them. Last fall we had our own private fishing sanctuary and the fish got to be between 3-6 pounds.

At one time it was difficult for me to locate their house on the long highway in Blackfoot. It isn't any more thanks to the gigantic power pole grandpa bought from Utah Power so he could hang his 9x12 foot American flag on. He bought 5 of those poles for $5 each since they were trying to get rid of them.

And yes, he is a Ford man. He drives a Ford F350 and makes it look nice. Above all he treats my grandmother with unwavering respect. She calls him Sir Handsome and often rides in the tractor with him and bails hay with him. I will let you in on more of the culture we have built around my grandparents farm in a later blog because it is worth sharing. These are some pics from our last field trip with Grandpa at the wheel.

Kelli and Sophie

A little country and a little city in this shoot. Kelli's horse is named Sophie. Her dad brought her down from Montpelier. His picture is below with the mustache. Sometimes when I want to take a picture of a mustache like this I back down because it is so intimidating. I complimented a man in Las Vegas last week on his mustache which was similar to this one and he almost killed me with his glare. Most times these guys are softies and want you to photograph their mustache and can't wait for you to ask but that one time they don't is what scares you.

Back to the horse. This horse means a lot to Kelli. She grew up with Sophie and I can relate to that. These pictures will become so valuable to Kelli as time goes on I believe and I am always conscious of that while I photograph. Anyway, I photographed Kelli's sisters wedding like 6 years ago and just have always really enjoyed this family. They are getting hitched April 2.

Happy St. Patty's Day

We are all green here at our house, not in the sense that the world uses the term going green but literally we are clad in green. My kids are scared out of their minds of leprechauns! Sami saw one last year. We have a beautiful neighbor who is in her 70's who told the kids that she has a leprechaun named Jolly the Jelly Leprechaun (I have done a spell check on each time I spell leprechaun and I haven't got it right yet) and he eats jelly. The kids put some jelly out and I went and made jelly footprints all over the porch. The kids have been real jumpy on St Patty's ever since.

Anyway, I took all these pictures yesterday. These ones of Jack are in my living room. Move the couch and voila, we have a studio. I have taken a lot of client's portraits against that wall. I always wonder if my clients think I am ghetto when I move the couch and find treasures under the couch like candy and pennies and crayons that have been there forever. In fact, I have to work hard to lose the ghetto image on a lot of things I do. You can take the kid outta the ghetto but ya can't take the ghetto outta the kid, they always say!

Beehives are a new fascination for me. My friend's daughter won half a beehive by entering an essay into a beekeepers organization. They went to a 5 hour class on beekeeping a couple weeks ago. Bees rock! I saw this yesterday in Hyde Park and had to snap a pick.

Here is a few pages from Cade and Tosha's album. The wheat was out in Richmond and the wedding was at the Logan Temple and the Old Rock church outside.

The Old Rock Church has a great outdoor venue now which I am happy about because I have never been fond of shooting inside that building. My favorite reception halls in Cache Valley are The Riter Mansion and The Alumni House at USU. Both have outdoor and indoor capabilities in case of bad weather. More importantly they both have great lighting in the evening. I should also mention that I like to shoot at Sherwood Hills in the Summer. It is great, even lighting.

So just a tip: Lighting is everything in photography and you can have the most beautiful place on earth to take pictures and if the lighting is crummy, the pictures won't be as pleasing( They won't be crummy because we can compensate for bad lighting). I have always appreciated when a bride consults me on locations and times because they both can make my job really easy or really difficult. More importantly the pictures can be so beautiful in favorable lighting conditions. I have yet to find a photographer who has been able to control the sun!

Viva Las Vegas!

I just spent 4 days in Las Vegas. It was the annual WPPI photographer convention. It was amazing!! I am not the same person I was a week ago. I assure you I have so much to learn and I don't feel like I am scratching the surface yet.

It brought back a "flood" of memories. Pun intended. Ten years ago I witnessed the worst flood Vegas has had in its populated history. I left for work one morning early and the skies were clear. By afternoon there was a humungous river one block from my house. I literally watched buses and cars getting swept away and finally even a house floating down that river. It was like nothing I have ever witnessed. I have video somewhere.

Anyway, I have lived in Las Vegas twice, once when I worked the summer doing concrete when I was 16 and then again when I was 21 fresh off my mission. About six years ago I even had a very large clientele down there. I was going down about every other month and taking a lot of family and children portraits. Eventually I ended up buying a condo down there as an "investment" thinking that I could use it and ride the real estate wave that was surreal at the time. I literally spent 10 minutes in that condo, total!! I sold it just barely in the nick of time before that house of cards came tumbling down. Disaster averted big time. After the housing bust down there no one was in the mood to spend money on photography any more so I haven't shot anything down there till this week.

My brother had a friend who was kind enough to let us stay at his house. They were great hosts. The kids weren't cooperating so we literally did a 5 minute photo shoot. I always try to take some pics of families who host. So if you are in Hawaii and reading this keep that in mind.

I just spent 5 days in Arizona with some of my best friends in the whole world, Janet and Clint Andersen. I guarantee Clint is the only 58 year old ever who had 9 splints put in his heart( in the last year) to play 11 games of basketball like we did 2 nights ago. Yeah, 11 games. Janet said that the doctor wanted him to exercise and test out how far he can push his heart. We pushed it to the limits. They were shorter games but 11 games of playing with Collin, Matt and Clint is like playing in dog years, it is 7 times harder than a regular game. Collin was on my team and on game 6 he hurt his hand twice and we thought he may have even broken his hand. He didn't even consider the option of stopping and since I needed him I just smiled and told him to take a couple minutes to let it heal. Collin and I ended up winning best of 11. We ripped through that court like a CAT 5 hurricane!!

I was down there mostly to finish up a project that I started in December down in Terlinqua, Texas on the border of Mexico. It is a documentary of an extraordinary man who has worked for Clint for 17 years as a concrete laborer. His wages were less than most but he saved and sacrificed and now owns 8 homes outright, paid for in cash. He is a fascinating character and has been gracious enough to share his story which I will post when it is done.

I will do an entire post on Texas when I get a chance because I loved it down there. I ate a hamburger in Terlingua that was bigger than my smallest child. If you are someone who wants to hide from the law I have the perfect place for you. Stay tuned..

Most of my photo shoots I put a lot of time into prior to the shoot. I spend a lot of time location scouting because every couple is so different. I have learned over the last ten years that you can't set your plans in stone because things change so quickly. Everything I do revolves around light. Light changes frequently which is why I have to be familiar with how a camera records light in every situation. These two shoots were within 24 hours and yet the light changed so drastically that I only photographed 1 of the 10 locations I had planned. Everything you see here was completely improvised on the shoot. We started at an elementary school because Anna forgot her bouquet and for the sake of time I met them out by their house which was by the school. We shot these first two right there then all heck broke loose when the school bell rang to let school out. We moved quickly to another location a block down the road where I had never shot (the second image).

Just about anywhere can be a great location if you understand light a little bit. I don't know why I am telling you this. Maybe a little bragging and complaining. Honestly, mostly a photographer's job consists of making lemonade out of lemons.

If I had one advice for brides I would say if you want great photographs consult the photographer on lighting before you choose where you have your reception, ceremony, time of day, etc... IT IS ALL ABOUT THE LIGHTING!!!

Of course there are ways of making the best of a bad lighting situation but some weddings just look better because of lighting. (Tangent, sorry)

This entire shoot was improvised. We didn't go to one spot that I planned but sometimes that is the funnest way to shoot. The important thing is the couple. Anna won a free bridal session from the USU bridal faire so I had not met them till that day. Great couple and I wish them a long and happy life together!

I smell spring...

Well, variety is the spice of life they say. A few years ago I coined the term "varietist" to explain to someone that I have a hard time doing the same thing over and over. I love new things, new adventures, new places, new people. Not to take away from old people, old places, etc. I still love those things but I am more like a stream than a pond. I don't like stagnancy. I love photographing all sorts of different things. Anyway, last week I had the opportunity to shoot Steven Covey and Jon Huntsman down at the Huntsman headquarters. One of the side benefits of being in situations like this is that I get to learn from great people. My favorite quote from Covey was that "retirement is a sick concept". He has 10 books in the works and has just become a tenured professor at the Jon M Huntsman school of business at Utah State. I love his principle based thought process. I think that some things will always be relevant. I highly recommend reading The 7 habits of Highly Effective People. Life changer! This picture was these two getting interviewed by Fox 13 Neil Cavuto.

You might not know this but a few years ago I worked briefly for a company in Salt Lake. While I did not enjoy it and I missed photography greatly I did have one or two highlights. One was that the night I saw Jason Hewlitt perform I was awarded a new car, a nice new car. I was awarded a Mini Cooper which as you know is built by BMW in their Mini Cooper factory in England. It was very exciting choosing everything and finally getting it a few months later. Anyway I had the opportunity to shoot pictures at a birthday party at the Salt Lake Country Club on the 12th and Jason was the main act. He is a phenomenal performer. Meanwhile, I had the privilege of going up to Beaver Ski Resort with Dakota and Heather. We were able to get an entire ski lift to ourselves because of Heather's connections. It was snowy on the way up by died down. Going out to these trees was more of a chore than it looks. I was soaked all the way up my thighs when we got done. Snowshoes would've been nice. This is a stark contrast to their wedding location, Hawaii!! Two extremes.

I'll tell you what I have been having a blast in this cold weather. These photos are from last friday with JaNea and Shawn and their dog Duke. I saw JaNea at a wedding I was shooting last summer and I knew her name, where she was from, that her family had a grocery store, and all sorts of eery details that only a stalker would know and neither of us have any idea how we know each other. Like my dad I have a gift for remembering "important" details such as birthdays from kids who sat next to me in first grade and where I was when I ate just about any meal I have ever eaten. Anyway, it is twilight zone material.

I am way looking forward to shooting this wedding in Logan and then the reception in a small town that I forget the name of but I love small towns.

I have decided that rather than battle trying to blog everyday I am going to try for once a week. I have so much material but I am going to start over and move forward cause with wedding season upon us in the spring I am beginning to get busy with bridal and engagement sittings.

I am thrilled with this upcoming season. I have so many things I want to do and try and then in March I am going to Vegas for WPPI, a photographer conference. I can't wait. I have a lot of fun weddings booked. I will be in Long Island, New York in May for a fun wedding. I look forward to spring here though cause it is incredible.

Anyway, here are two couples who I got to know this week. I look forward to Dan and Laurel's wedding coming up in March. Great people.

Sorensens extended

It's hard to believe that it was like 20 degrees outside. We did this shoot in perty near 10 minutes. Gotta act fast this time of year. This was taken at the mouth of Butterfield Canyon near Kennecott Copper Mine on Friday. I have been doing a lot of family shoots lately, for a time everyday for almost two months. I love it.

Anyway, I can't say enough about the Sorensens. I have learned so much from them over the 18 years that I have known them. Growin up I had my own bed at their house I was over so much. Some of the greatest people I know.

Our photo shoot up at Tony Grove last Saturday. The bugs were so numerous it almost blackened the skies. This is a photo of my in-laws who have always been great to me. I couldn't ask for a better couple to emulate in so many ways. Anyway, it was a dandy time. This week I have two family reunions, three bridal shoots, and a wedding. I am open for more family sessions. The cost is $100 for an outdoor session (indoor is $200 cause it is boring) and a la carte pricing for enlargements. Anyway, a busy week all over the place.

A couple weeks ago I photographed Evan's brothers wedding. Evan is heading out to Brazil soon. The shot on the bench reading is a mimic of a photograph I have of my grandfather sitting on a bench reading. I never met my grandfather but he served a three year mission in Argentina for the LDS church. He started the first primary in Argentina and the first foreign exchange program at Utah State University and I believe U of U. What is amazing is that prior to serving in Argentina he was 4 years in World War 2 and aftermath. He has some amazing black and white images that he took from all over the world. He died when my mother was 6 but from what I read we have a lot in common. Evan will have a great experience in Brazil. I wish him luck.

America's Next Top Model

I have been crazy busy this week and I was in Salt Lake shooting a wedding and other things from Wednesday till Friday night. I got some heat stroke at the wedding on Friday. I was not feeling well. My temperature gauges have been all messed up since the times when I worked on a concrete crew in Vegas, Pheonix and near Death Valley in the summer times. I live in Cache Valley because it is just right. Anyway, I was able to squeeze a shoot in with Keisha on Saturday. She was accompanied by her boyfriend Rich who is one of my all time best friends. It was great times. Good luck Keisha!

I spent the last few days down in Sanpete county and made a vacation out of a photo shoot. It is nice having connections all over because that virtually all our vacations revolve around a photo shoot. My good friends Ted and Michelle live in Mt. Pleasant on 10 beautiful acres and we stayed with them while I went down to Manti and spent some time with two of Utah's greatest basketball coaches of all time, Wilbur Braithwaite and LaDell Andersen. I have followed LaDell for years because his son Clint and his wife set my parents up. Clint and Janet are some of my favorite people. I worked for Clint doing concrete for a few summers and he is a large reason why I run my business the way I do. Well anyway they are a basketball family and my dad who played basketball up at USU raised me telling stories of Wayne Estes and I always loved to hear LaDell tell stories of how he coached Estes.
Last year we were able to get some footage of LaDell telling that story among others. I have to lay the foundation of how Wilbur comes in to play. Bob who is another son of LaDell helped me on the footage with his dad and it turns out we have a similar interest which is a desire to tell the story of some incredible people so that others might benefit. Bob approached me with the idea of doing some photography of Wilbur and I jumped on the opportunity. As it turns out Wilbur and LaDell are old teammates up at USU. Wilbur came back from World War 2 after having been hit with shrapnel and still played. To this day he lives with the shrapnel in his body. He went on to coach basketball and tennis at Manti High School. He coached basketball for 37 years and tennis for 52 years. He gave his time voluntarily almost every summer to teach tennis. He has won numerous national awards including the Award of Merit which he shares with others like Gerald Ford. The awards are many for these two coaches but I like them because both of them share a common quality. They make you feel like you are the most important person in the world. When I met LaDell some 15 years ago we stayed at his house and he put his arm around me and couldn't wait to show me his collection of classic movies. I have never forgotten how a man who has coached some of the greatest players in basketball and seen so much put his arm around me and made me feel like I was somebody. Small but significant. Wilbur possesses this same gift. I drove him to a location for a photo shoot and immediately he began with questions. He was very perceptive and interested. He asked me why I would be willing to drive clear down to Manti to take pictures of an old man. I responded that I need my children to have genuine role models and if the media isn't going to seek them out I will. With all the false role models we have I need my kids to have real ones. He responded by saying, "There is always a reason behind what people do." That is my reason.
I have barely scratched the surface on these two but I thought it was incredible that I was able to get them both in a photo together. To me it was a classic moment and I hope the beginning of taking pictures of many more incredible people

I love this family. These guys have been great clients and friends since I met them at a bridal faire like 5 years ago. I shot Jill's older sister's wedding and then took some photos for Jill's senior photos. This is a 1966 Mustang named Sally. Coincendentally they bought it two weeks after Jill was born. We took it out and got some sweet shots.

Jill works at a veteranary clinic and taught me more about dogs in two hours than I have learned in a lifetime. We are going to go to the dog show this weekend. I have a 7 year old who has turned entreprenuer and I told her I would pay the rest for a dog if she came up with $100. At the rate she is making money it may be a week before she has it. She made $15 in like an hour selling her easter candy she got and she is my only employee as a lighting specialist (she holds a reflector for me sometimes).
Anyway, fun family, great people!

Cade and Tosha Engagement

I have had like 10 photo shoots in the last few couple weeks and haven't had much time to post so here is the beginning of many posts to come. This is Cade and Tosha. I met Tosha at the Wedding Showcase and Cade just happens to be my wife's second cousin. They were very fun to shoot and I just kind of let them do all of the work. Tosha left for Korea a few days later. I envy her because Korean food is my favorite.

My Adventure in Chicago with Savanah and Daniel

Yes, that is rain pouring down and no that is not Chicago. It is Indiana which I personally thought was beautiful. I can imagine the corn fields in the summer are amazing. Anyway this is a photo of Savanah and Daniel on perhaps one of the most adventurous and eventful weddings I have shot to date. They will forgive me for detailing their wedding day as they are close friends and two of the most optimistic people I know. I think they have a lot to teach and hopefully you will be able to see what I mean. From beginning to end they laughed and enjoyed it all.

The story goes:
Friday Morning: I flew in and accidentally bumped into Savanah on the Shuttle bus going to the rental cars. I followed her to Steve and Brandi's house in Parkridge, Illinois home of Hillary Clinton. We ate lunch and I then took a train to scope out locations downtown Chicago for our photo shoot the next morning at 8:00 am. Chicago was amazing. I have been there a few times but this time was the best.
Friday Day: I ate the second best hotdog I have ever eaten in my life. The first was in Chicago a decade ago.
Friday Eve: I went out to dinner at a Sicilian restaurant with Steve, Brandi, their kids and Spat (Daniel's friend). Steve picked up the tab, thanks Steve. They were fantastic hosts. At dinner I get a call from Savanah that Daniel has not only missed his flight but missed it because he was pulled over by power hungry cop who held him for 45 minutes while his plane flew over head. Daniel's car was registered but just didn't have the sticker on his Cali plates. California offices were closed so the cop couldn't verify and did the next stupid thing which is take the keys from Daniel and impound his car. I was supposed to pick Daniel up that night but the plans were now changed. His friend picked him up and took him to the airport and he left at midnight instead of arrive.
Saturday morn: Because of the late booking of the flight he had to stop in New York and he didn't arrive till 9:30. Spat and I picked him up. We discovered that the airlines had put his luggage on a different plane and it wouldn't be in till 10:30. The wedding was scheduled for 12:30 at the Chicago Temple. We took Daniel to Steve and Brandi's so he could shower and stuff. He had been up all night. Then we went back to the airport dodging the airport parking monitors (mean people) and got his bag.
We didn't really no how to get to the Temple and we got stuck in Construction. Daniel was laid back and we had a good discussion about paving your own way in this world.
Meanwhile the bride Savanah, got pulled over on her way to the wedding and got away with a batted eye.
Fortunately in our lost state we looked over and Savanah's mom was in the other lane and we followed them to the temple. By now the once beautiful morning was turning arctic and windy.
We arrived to the temple and they pushed the ceremony time back an hour to 1:30 so we could get a few minutes of pictures in the cold and wind. We did just that for maybe 15-20 minutes then went inside just prior to Savanah turning into a popsicle.
They invited me to the ceremony which I was honored to attend and it was very nice.
Afternoon: Daniel and I hopped in my car and followed the bride and Alisha her friend. I think he wanted to come with me because of the higher chance of getting something to eat at Wendy's. We were set on eating. We grabbed something then ditched my rental car at a quasi rest stop/ service station area off the freeway. I hopped in with them as Daniel struggled to stay awake finally succombed and eventually curled up into the fetal position as Savanah drove 80+ mph while texting in a rain storm. Savanah if you are reading this, yes, I will admit I was frightened a little. The reception was located two hours away. We had 15 minutes to shoot and where to shoot was the question. We pulled into a Walmart and in one of my favorite scenes of the day Savanah went inside to buy an umbrella and use the restroom to change back into her wedding dress.
She came out and it was raining sideways. We had choices to make. This is where it pays to hire someone with a little experience. She turned around and said, "Where do you want to go?" I had never been to Indiana let alone whatever city we were in which I still don't know. So I said, "Right there, in the field next to the Walmart." The image below was taken just behind the Walmart. I had to take a plastic Walmart bag out of the picture. We had to wake Daniel up but he was a great sport. The image above was in a small town in Indiana close to the reception. By the time we got done we were all soaked.
Reception: We had a great time. The food was great the dancing was fun. I got in a dance circle and after I did my dance routine the bishop looked at me jokingly and said he was going to have nightmares after my performance. I gave it my all what can I say I have never been a wall flower even as a photographer.
On the Way Home: I drove home with my hosts Steve and Brandi and we stopped by what we thought was my parking spot for my rental car and my car was missing. After calling highway patrol we discovered that there is an identical rest stop on the north side of the road. We were on the south and majorly disoriented. We found my car.
Sunday morning: Blizzard. Snow was everywhere. I drove to the airport in the A.M. and dropped off my rental car. As I got on the shuttle from Hertz to the aiport a lady entered the shuttle and said, "Sir you left your wallet in your car." She handed it to me and I opened it and it was Daniel's. Great, I thought. How am I going to get this to them. I knew they were leaving to Mexico that morning and I knew his wallet might be important for their honeymoon. I texted him and as it turns out their flight was delayed two hours and they were just coming to the rental place. I gave his wallet to the shuttle driver and instructed him to drive it back to the rental place. I have not heard from them since so I assumed that received it.
Meanwhile the blizzard was so bad that my flight was canceled with no certainty that they were going to reschedule. Luckily I had Harry Potter 5 on audio CD so I didn't care. I sat in the airport for hours without a care in the world. John Adams once said, "You are never alone with a poet in your pocket." I never leave home without a book of some sort. I am never bored!
I finally got a flight and arrived home. It was a great trip only because Savanah and Daniel are genuinely positive people. They laughed the whole time and everybody around them did too. They turned what could have been a devestating day into a wonderful memory. The important thing is that they got married and their isn't a police officer in the world that can take that from them.

You may remember Andrew and Megan, the Irish wedding from 2008. Well, Mike is Andrew's friend from the ol' country. They were friends in County Cork and have continued their friendship even though Mike now lives in the States. Meghann is from Lousiana. Of course the common topic whenever you meet someone from Louisiana is how they like their crawfish. I am bummed that I won't be able to be at their engagement party in Louisiana because they are having a crawfish boil. I was introduced to crawfish by a man who claimed that sucking the juice out of the head was a common thing in those parts. I tried it and didn't mind it. Of course, I don't mind much of anything except when I was force fed an octupus brain in Italy. Anyway, we had a fun shoot down in Utah County last Friday. I was bummed that the Aggies lost that morning but what a game!! I should be posting more frequently as we get more and more into wedding season. I am excited to try all sorts of new ideas.

Sami got a new camera for her birthday. There is no limit to what she photographs. She is very creative and frequently says, "I should've brought my camera." She especially likes taking pictures of everything. She has a 256 mb card that holds 555 images.

A rebel without a cause.

I have had my nose in my computer a lot lately and have grossly neglected this blog spot. I have been developing some new ideas for albums and stuff and designing albums as well. I have a lot of stuff coming up so I will be posted more in the near future. Make sure to come to the Wedding Showcase at the Loft in Logan on March 21st. It should be sweet. I will be in Chicago at the end of the month for Savanah and Daniel's wedding. I am excited as I love Chicago. Anyway I will be more active with my blog moving into the spring.

This photo shoot almost didn't happen because of snow. Snowflakes look better on video than on photo because they freeze in front of eyes and stuff. Anyway we had a great time. Mike is a hockey player and Danica holds her own on the ice so we hit Merlin Olsen Ice Rink which has been open lately. It is such a sweet rink. I need to get some skates. Enjoy the pics.

I do not often take time to intentionally photograph landscapes. Anything I show you is usually something that happens when I am shooting portraits of people and see something that needs photographed. Often I forget that I even took the shot and then stumble upon it later. This is the case with this photograph that I took with a couple last fall. Savannah and Daniel

I did a photo shoot with Savannah some 4-5 years ago and like many of my clients she quickly became a lifetime friend of the family. She called almost immediately after she got engaged and that is truly an honor when someone says they have been waiting to use you as a photographer. I am honored. We will be shooting the wedding at the end of March in Chicago. This is an energetic couple. I don't have to do much work, they do all the work and I just photograph.

The above photo has a story behind it. Daniel forgot to bring a tie for some more formal shots so we went looking for a shop with ties downtown Salt Lake. I remembered a conversation with a man I had on an elevator around 7 years ago. I served an LDS mission in Italy and for some reason I figured he was Italian and we had a small conversation in which he mentioned that he owned the men's clothing store to the east of the SLC Temple. He was super nice. So on Saturday I said "Why don't we go to that little Italian store named Moda Italia?" I guessed that ties might cost $30 or something. So we enter to this warm Italian smile and he was so helpful and nice. Savannah used the dressing room to change and came out and Tony (store owner) was helping Savannah find a tie that matched her blouse. Daniel went to change and as we were walking to pay for the tie Savannah and I looked at the price tag, $135 for the chosen tie. We looked at each other in complete shock. I don't know ties could cost so much. I thought an expensive tie was $30. We were in too deep to pull out now. So Savannah and I said we had better wait for Daniel cause he had the deep pockets. We told him how much it was but Tony was picking up on the fact that we had no idea a tie would cost so much so he said he would let us name our price. Daniel says, "$30". Tony about fell off his chair, "Whata are youa kiddinga mea?" he says in a thick Italian accent. Daniel then says, "$45". Tony is still in amazement. He says," I am nota kidding with you when Ia tella you that I paid more than that just to get it here." Feeling partly responsible I leaned over and told Daniel that I would pay half. Tony settled on a price close to half of the price of the tie and mentioned under his breath that he felt ashamed because he has never sold a tie for so little. He made sure we knew that everything in the store was imported from Italy and was top of the line. I wandered around the room and was now aware of all the price tags in the room. The average suit coat sold for $950. I have bought cars for less than that. Come to think of it I have bought cars less than the cost of that tie. Nonetheless, it was a great adventure and Tony calmed down after Savannah put her arm around him. Italians just need a little love.

Jack's encounter with an Escalator

We took the kids to the Church history museum a few days ago and Jack had never been on an escalator at least that he recalled. He was scared out of his mind. He finally decided to get on and when we got to the top every kid's worst nightmare happened. His shoelace got caught and was sucking his shoe into the stairs. I saved him from going to wherever kids go when they get sucked into one of those things but he was terrified. He sat there and stared at the escalator for at least 10 minutes. We went away for a minute and I turned around and he had gone back to stare a little longer. It was hilarious. All I had was my cell phone camera but it was better than nothing.

Logan Temple

Last night I was shooting some bridals for Caroline. They turned out great and I wish I could show them to you but you will have to wait till after the wedding. I am forbidden to permit the groom to see them. So we will have to make do with just one image that I got last night of the Logan Temple.
The lighting was fantastic. When I was in college I worked at the Logan temple on the grounds crew for some three years. I enjoyed my experience there very much and still am very close to the crew. They are a fun bunch. My good friend Lance Thurston decided to join the Army while we were working together raking leaves. He is a great man and I believe he is currently in Afganistan. He has been in Iraq already. I hope he is doing well. Anyway, I thought this was a good shot.

Hallow's Eve

My Mother-in-Law commented today that we didn't bring our kids over on Halloween to see their costumes. I told her they were dressed in the same outfits they are every other day, princess attire. Maddi eats, sleeps and drinks the Little Mermaid. She has been Ariel everyday for the last two years. Sami alternates princesses. Jack was a one time Lion who was unafraid to walk into just about every house we knocked on and without hesitation head for the kitchen or to greet the family dog. We had to pull him out of more than one home. We scored big though, big!! This is the best year for candy I have seen since 87'. Sami had to empty one bucket so she kid get a refill. We scored some full size candy bars and even some $5 McDonald gift certificates after getting pulled into an elderely woman's house to chat in her living room for 25 minutes. She was wonderful! My wife and I talked about her after because she was so cool. I said, "Who is going to replace these old belles?" We both agreed that there are so many amazing young people but that the World War 2 generation is leaving some huge shoes to fill. So I leave you with a challenge, hug a grandparent this week.

If you haven't noticed I haven't been posting much lately. I have been so busy this time of year that I haven't had time to do much of anything outside of essentials. So it has been a while since I shot Mark and Hillarie's wedding but I am now posting some images cause I have some time to breathe. There were plenty of kids running around to take pictures of at this wedding. I think the Wests had like 21 grandkids or something like that. Both incredible families and I am glad I had the priviledge of being a part of this, thanks.

This is a rare sight! Rarely do I ever have a picture taken of myself. Usually I only get pictures of myself in the mirror. Thanks to Janet Andersen who is a photographer out of Pheonix, Arizona and like my second mom I have a photo of myself. She is my mom's best friend. To explain: My mom, Janet and my sister Maggie all invited themselves to come to Ireland and "help" me. Maggie works at the airlines so they got there for fairly cheap. Melanie wasn't able to come and I missed her dearly the whole time. Janet had never been out of the country so she took at least 100,000 pictures. Anyway, thanks to Janet for getting a photo of me. My only complaint is it doesn't show my beautiful eyes and my cut chin.

Cliffs of Insanity

Three days ago I was hanging my head over the cliffs of insanity (think Princess Bride). They are more formally known as the Cliffs of Moher. This last couple weeks has felt like insanity but Ireland was a huge bright spot for me. Prior to leaving my computer broke down and I couldn't get anything done like I hoped. We had a blast in Ireland. It has put a spell over me. It was just like imagined only better. It seems like it is always spring time over there. It rains a lot and everything is green, green, green. It is true there are rock walls as far as the eye can see. They are covered with moss and vines and such. Driving was an experience. I have driven in a lot of different countries but this was the most awkward. Everything is backwards. My stick shift was on my left and the oncoming traffic on my right. There were only three times I accidentally drove on the wrong side of the road and luckily there was no oncoming traffic. In the end I got really good at it though.

Megan and Andrew were so fun to work with. We drove all over the place and visited some awesome places that Megan had chosen. She has been a medical student over there for four years and met Andrew there at chruch. Andrew is Irish and studies at CCU (Cork University). CCU looks like Hogwarts. They live in Cork which is the 2nd largest city in Ireland (Dublin is the first). Ireland is home to 4 million people. We are half way there in Utah at 2 million something people. Megan was gracious enough to accomodate my entourage in her apartment while she went and stayed at a friends house. Her apartment was smack dab in the middle of Cork city center. It made it really fun to walk right into the downtown scene. The first night we were there we walked right into an Irish Folk Festival. We jumped right into the dancing and swinging. We danced "the Seige if Ennis" which it turns out is the same dance that Megan and Andrew will be asking guests to participate in at their wedding (Dec 20 at the Salt Lake Temple). It involved a lot of swinging partners around in circles. Fantastic!! I haven't danced like that since my sister and I found ourselves in the middle of a hippie drum circle in Montreal.
There seem to be as many castles in Ireland as there are Walmarts in America. Eating an Irish breakfast with Andrew's family was a highlight. Irish pancakes, rashers (bacon), eggs, toast and really good milk was put out for us. It was delish! Lemon juice from fresh lemons and sugar was great on the Irish pancakes.
Megan and Andrew took us to some choice places. The first night we met at CCU and took some shots there in the rain. We drove that night to Charlesfort in Kinsale. It was foggy like in the movies. I slipped on some jagged rocks on the rocky beach and smashed my favorite lens against a rock. Yup, it is broke but I think I can repair it. The glass is still good but it doesn't focus or zoom.
Some favorite spots we shot at were Clonakilty at the light house and the Dingle Peninsula. The Dingle Peninsula is where the beginning of Far and Away was filmed. Beautiful!!

Bingham Copper Mine- Kennecott

What a day today!! I mean that this whole week has been crazy busy. Tuesday and Wednesday I shot Mark and Hillarie's wedding (I will post soon) Today I drove to Midway at 6:00 am for an engagement shoot. I barely had time for lunch and went straight to a gig at Kennecott Copper Mine. What a crazy experience up there. They have the largest dump truck in the world (not shown). Anyway, I will have more to post later. I haven't even hardly had time to pack to go to Ireland in the morning. All I really need is a rain coat and my camera anyway. The day after I get home I wake up and go straight to St. George to shoot a wedding. Anyway, if you need anything call 435-881-9160 or email me while I am gone. P.S. Kelsey Bridals- Logan Utah

Kelsey is the daughter of my bishop in South Jordan who sent me off to Italy on an LDS mission. She was kind enough to drive down from Rexburg, ID and have me take her pictures. It was good to get to know her and her mother and her aunt a little better. She is getting married on November 22, 2008, right before Thanksgiving. Tomorrow I will be photographing Mark Watterson and Hillarie West at the Salt Lake Temple. This Saturday I will be flying out to Ireland on an extensive engagement shoot (4 days). I will try to post some of the amazing stuff we are going to be getting but I may have to wait till I get home next Thursday. I will keep you posted!

10 minutes with Jack-Boy

I have been bottling something inside of me for years and I think it is time to let it out. I think traditional kids portraits are too perfect. There, I said it. That is a load off my chest. Of course this is coming from someone whose favorite author is Mark Twain. I love Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. Moving on.. you guys already know Jack-Boy. I am doing everything in my power to make sure he has a proper Huckleberry Finn upbringing only without the Drunken Father and all that. Bare feet are encouraged at our house. Melanie might beg to differ. Anyway I find with my kids that when I get an urge to photograph I just grab the first kid I see no matter what they are doing or wearing. They are used to it. When I shoot I imagine looking at these shots when I am 60. I think how much they will be worth to me. There is no price. It doesn't take long at all to capture a memory. I did this session in 10 minutes within 100 feet of my front door. I love these kids!!
P.S. You may notice Jack-Boy has some turquoise finger nail polish on. This may be a big difference between him and Huck Finn. The difference being that Huck never had sisters.

Eric and Caroline

Always racing against the sun!! Eric is the brother of Mark who you can see two posts ago. They are both getting married within a month and a half of each other. I have had the pleasure to get to photograph both of them and look forward to our upcoming photo shoots. They have some great ideas which helps a lot. Caroline is easy to shoot probably because her father is a photographer. I know my kids are surely used to being photographed. Eric if you are reading this I wanted to mention another book that I just read that you might like. It is called "King Leopold's Ghost". It is the story of a the King of Belgium and his not so kind take over of the Congo around the end of the 1800s. You may have already read it. Anyway here are a few pics of phase one of our adventure. More to come.......

Gramma Carol and Grandpa Ford

Labor day weekend we packed up the van for an All American voyage up to Yellowstone. My kids had a blast. We brought a little grill and marinaded some veggies and chicken on the kabobs. Fantastic!! My oldest, Sami, and I stayed up and watched falling stars. She was mesmerized. We promised the kids that we would see some buffalo. We only saw one lousy buffalo barely on the way out. Usually there are a ton. Yellowstone was only phase one of the trip. Phase two was going to my cousin Melissa's house in Rexburg. Her husband Derek and I went fly fishing and pulled about 20 out of the drink on Saturday. A couple were even almost as big as my finger. It was fun though. Phase three is the traditional fair time in Blackfoot at my grandma and grandpa's house. Words can not describe the joviality that occurs when we step foot on that 150 acre farm. When I say we I mean all my siblings, cousins, aunts, no uncles, nieces, nephews, etc... We have so many traditions when we go there that they are hard to count. The big one is going to the Eastern Idaho State Fair. Watching people at the fair is our favorite sport. An occasional picture of a mullet or something else spectacular is fair game. Arm-wrestling, hypnotists, alligator wrestlers, monkeys that ride donkeys, are just a few of the fantastic things we have witnessed at the fair. I could write a book on the things we do at Grandmas. To name a few: Bocce tournaments, fourwheelers, swim in canal or Snake River, make movies, eat, eat and eat, drink unlimited supply of Coke, farm dinners and breakfasts, trap racoons and skunks, pick corn, watch movies, play Atari, and much much more. We have been slowly collecting photos of the farm for posterity. Here are a few more to add to the quiver.

Mark and Hillarie

I gained a lot of new friends on this photo shoot. Some of Mark and Hillarie's family came along to help and I couldn't have done it without them. Thanks guys!! We had a lot of fun in Salt Lake and up at Snowbird. I am so impressed with both Hillarie and Mark and their families. As a parent I appreciate the advice I get from parents who have raised up successful families. I learn a lot. They also introduced me to the yogurt place , "Spoon Me". My lanta that was some good stuff!! It is like natural yogurt with natural fruit. Not to get too detailed but mine had peaches, blackberries and raspberries. More fun to come from these guys.

My inlaws (brother and sister in law) have asked me to show them some images that they might use for decorations on their wall. Here are a few from my trip to Paris a few years ago. Coincidentally I saw both Jacques Chirac and Vladimir Putin on that trip. They were the leaders of France and Russia at the time.
As a side note: Paris is hard to enjoy after you have been to Italy. I hope I don't offend anyone by saying that.

When I first started shooting weddings eight years ago I had a friend that was going to join the army. I told him wedding photography is a lot like combat. You have limited ammo (film back then) and there is only one of you and you have to shoot everyone in front of you. I explained to him how intense it can be at a ceremony that only happens once and you have to get the shots much like a sniper on a mission. Many times you must wait patiently for something to happen that never happens. When it does you can't be caught snoozing. If I am caught snoozing I to answer to an angry mother rather than a drill seargent. Equipment can fail (as it did when my Canon broke on Lindsey and Josh's engagement sitting) and people get sick. You must make a million split second decisions based on lighting, composition, shutter speed, aperture, film speed, which lens to use, angles, posing, flash, reflector, etc.. all the while making sure that everyone in front of you feels comfortable and is smiling. There are also politics. I have to please not only the bride but the mother of the bride. Rarely do they have the same taste. (For the record that was not an issue at this wedding). Eight years ago another friend said, "How hard could it be?" All you have to do is put somebody in front of you and push a button. If it were that easy I would get bored overnight. The amazing thing about what I do is I get to meet amazing people like Josh and Lindsey and their respective families and learn from them as I strive to perfect my trade. Unlike the Army I get to linger at receptions and mingle with people who want to talk to me not kill me. I slip in and out of crowds and eat amazing food and take pictures of amazing people. This reception was no exception. It was a blast and I made several new friends. It is now history, a very well documented history.

We are park hoppers. I get bored with the same ol parks so we explore new parks. We hit Sugar Park in Amalga yesterday. It is an old school park with all the hard metal and old iron tank merry-go-rounds. That is the way I like em. No school like the old school. There is a sign nailed to a tree that says something like "it is not our responsibility if you get hurt" I love it.

Quinceanera, Logan, UT

Last week I shot this quinceanera which for those of you who don't know it is kind of coming of age for a 15 year old girl. It is a huge thing in Mexico from what I understand. It is just as big an event as a wedding (to shoot anyway) The ceremony lasted at least an hour after which we went to a nearby park to get some shots with Daisy (the 15 year old) and six guys dressed in tuxes. When I went back to my car I looked at my seat and there was a blue crayon melted on my seat (it was a hot day). One of my kids had put a crayon on my seat and it melted and I turned to look at my butt and saw that I had blue crayon covering my whole right cheek. I had light tan slacks on with a tucked shirt and not one of those guys said anything to me!! I ran home to change my pants. Then we went to a reception that was full of dancing, cake cutting, food, musical chairs, toasts, gift giving, etc.. These guys really know how to throw a party. The food was amazing. I always make time for food. I usually don't care about cakes but this cake had like 6 tiers with a different flavor in each tier. It was full of peaches and bananas etc.. It was great. Anyway, it was a fun event even if I didn't understand anything anyone said.

My week in Arizona

Took a trip to Arizona with my oldest buddy Joe Andersen. When I say oldest I mean that he has been my friend as long as I have lived. He is the most imaginative friend I have and I love him for that reason. The purpose of the trip was to do a documentary of Joe's grandpa LaDell on video for posterity then to help his dad do some concrete in Arizona. LaDell has a long history of basketball in the state of Utah. He was Asst. coach at U of U, Head coach of Utah State University, Head coach of the Utah Stars (predecessor to the Jazz, ABA) Head coach at BYU. He has been as scout for the Utah Jazz and has made recommendations to the Jazz for players such as John Stockton and Darren Williams. He is a hero of mine because he is one of the most hard nosed people I have ever met yet extremely kind and generous. We stayed at his house in St. George and got some good footage the next day. After that we headed to Phoenix area where Joe lives and helped his dad for three days doing some concrete on the Paradise Valley Golf Course. It was hot and miserable. I got heat stroke (114 degrees) and smashed both my big toes. I will be losing both toenails shortly as they are purple and black. What was I thinking going to do concrete in Arizona in July? I actually love it after i am done because it cleans the creative pallet. Everything tastes better and smells better after you almost DIE doing something miserable. IT gets the creative juices flowing and puts everything back in perspective. For that it is worth it. Anyway, I ended up taking some pictures with my new camera that I bought on the way down. I switched to Nikon this week. Sick of Canon's breaking down!!

Lindsey Bridals

Never a dull moment. We shot Lindsey's bridals on Tuesday and it was like 95 degrees. During our day we shot some pics downtown Salt Lake, got harrassed by a homeless man, got attacked by more bugs than I have ever seen in my life, and were stuck in traffic for eternity, had the cops get after us at the State Capital and my car broke down on the way home at midnight(radiator hose exploded). I had my wife, my sister-in-law and my boy Jack stuck on the side of the rode on an off ramp immobile. I was walking to a gas station about a mile away and an older couple picked me up at midnight!! They took me to Smiths to get anti-freeze and on the way back we saw a cop and waved him down and I got in the car with him so we could take me back to the car. He lit up like a bolt of lightning. In the end we stayed the night at my sister in laws friends house on their floor. Jack slept with the dog's blanket and pillow. We were glad to be somewhere other than the car. Thank you Henderson family for your hospitality. We arrived home 16 hours later than expected.
All said and done Lindsey has been a die hard. I told her in the beginning if we want to get the best we have to work for it. She did all the way through and it was worth it. Thanks for your hard work Lindsey. Always an adventure!!

Good Things Utah!!

Last week I stayed at my little brother's house and the next morning we woke up and went to Good Things Utah with three of his friends Jordan, Jared and Bridger. We thought we would shake things up a bit since it is normally a show for females. We pulled up to the studio and saw a line of women and not one man. Someone asked if we should turn around. We decided to approach it like men and just go for it. When we got inside we sat between rows of Brownie scouts and Draper moms. The first thing the announcer asked was 'Why are you here?" My little brother Matt said, "Because we love the show". I personally had never seen it. In the end we learned about how to cook Beefalo ( a mix between a cow and buffalo) and how to plant trees with Grandma Joy. It was interesting and apparently quite a few moms watch it in Utah. When it was over we got to go take pictures with the hosts. I might add we got three television appearances as an audience and we can be heard yelling in the background with our masculine Arsenio type hoots. Fantastic adventure!

Liz and Ryan: May 6, 2008 at the Salt Lake Temple. What an awesome wedding. I always learn knew things as I observe didn't people as I shoot different events. I learned a lot from these two families. I can't quite put it in words but as a father of three children I only hope my family is as tight as these that I saw. Photographing people is what I love because everyone is unique and it is never dull because of that. I love shooting at the Tuscany which is where the reception was held. I left my wallet at my uncle's house in Springville the night before and almost ran out of gas on the way to the reception (of course you never mention those kind of things right). I got some sweet pics of the band. There website is www.abekaelin.com . They were awesome. The guitarist owns the very guitar I have coveted for years. This was an all around fun wedding with plenty to shoot. I should mention the food was great as well. A photographer has to learn to eat fast and keep one hand free but being a food lover I always manage and this was no exception. This may be tacky but over the years I have developed some stealth methods of eating and shooting at the same time and I never go hungry and many times my clients are worried that I didn't get anything to eat. I do have photographer friends that don't believe in eating on the job. I feel sorry for them because most weddings I shoot have great food. Anyway here are but a few of the many pics.

SETTEBELLO... undoubtably the best pizza in Utah

A year ago my sister told me about a new pizzeria that was supposed to make an authentic pizza. After living in Italy one is never the same when it comes to authenticity and I was skeptical as usual. (I once had someone tell me they had an authentic pizza at Fazolis) I found a pizzeria that came close to the real thing about 5 years ago but not quite. So last fall when we went I was incredibly excited about what had been created right here in Salt Lake City. I ordered the "Capriciosa" which means "spoiled" like a brat that is. My wife ordered the same because that is what she had ordered when we were in Milan a couple of years ago and she has not quit talking about it. It was so authentic I began to wonder how they did it. Since that night I have taken or referred many friends to Settebello so they could taste what I have been trying to explain to them for so long. It is impossible to explain because frankly the ingredients to make these pizzas don't really exist here in Utah, almost all of them have to be shipped directly from Naples, Italy the birth place of the pizza. I explained to someone recently that the pizza in Naples is like a religion but honestly I don't know if religion holds a candle to the pizza. I would rather tell a Naples native that their child is ugly than tell them their pizza is aweful. Anyway, Ron Adair and I thought this would be a great place to shoot because we are huge food lovers and especially appreciate someone who is trying to do something the right way and is as passionate about what they are doing as we are about what we are doing. Michael Brooks, owner of Settebello was open to the idea of letting us spend an entire day with the crew and clients at Settebello. Honestly, we were more excited about this idea after we talked to Michael because we could see that he was totally passionate about what he is doing and is completely dedicated to authenticity. We captured the ins and outs of this dynamic business and came to love the crew both in the front an back end of this restaurant. If you ask anybody on the crew if they are sick of eating pizza the answer was always "not even close". They all shared the same passion about what is happening at Settebello and loved being a part of something unique. I spent a lot of time brushing up on my Italian with Matteo who you will see making pizzas sometimes with Alex, Beau and Mario. He has 25 years of experience making pizzas in Italy and truly is an artist. All the people were fantastic but truthfully the highlight of the day for me was the two pizzas I ate. I had "La Diavola" and "Quattro Stagioni" both of which I highly recommend. Settebello is located across the street from P.F Changs to the north west at 260 South 200 West. Never wear sandles in the Desert!!

Featured here are some images from a photo shoot in Scottsdale, AZ. What a beautiful weekend it was. My wife came down with me and we left the kids home. We got home last night and woke up to snow on the ground this morning. The first thing I noticed when we got there was that the desert area in Scottsdale is a gold mine for photographs. So I thought it would be a good idea to end our photo shoot among the cacti of Arizona. So we got out there and I had the family where I want them and I began to shoot. I began to back up and stepped my mesh shoes right into a "jumping cactus" called such because of it's ability to detach from the mother cactus. So I had a ball of cactus stuck in my foot and my friend Kelly came to help me get it out. Meanwhile I back up into another and get one stuck in my leg. Mind you these are like porcupine quills with barbs on the end. They are meant to stick and pulling them out means pulling out your flesh with it. Kelly yanks the cactus out when I wasn't expecting it and it hurt like a mother. I then began working on getting the cactus out of my foot when all of the sudden I look up and Kelly has got the previous ball stuck in his hand. So I began to help him get that out and then Kelly saw that I was about to step on the last one that came off the my leg and he picked it up and threw it without thinking and it went right into his sons foot. His feet were exposed because he was wearing sandles. He began to scream and kick and it got really stuck so we had to pick him up and hold him still. We had no idea how to get all of those barbs out of his foot because he had so many stuck deep (later I counted 15 holes in his foot). While I was thinking Kelly grabs the sandle and yanks as hard as he can and pulls the hole cactus out in one swoop. It was the equivalent of getting a tooth pulled when it is not even loose. I have never heard of a plant more appropriately named than the "jumping cactus". The image where Kelly is holding his son is right after this whole incident. In that moment Jackson said to Kelly, "Dad, why did you throw that at my foot?" We managed to get a few shots off anyway.

Oliver Twist meets Huck Finn

I had an idea of doing a shot with my son with an Oliver Twist look a while ago. I wanted it to look like a shot taken around the depression that you might see in an old history book or genealogy book or something. I had another photo shoot cancel today and I had the bug to shoot so we took Jack out to my brother's house and did something close to what I imagined. Jack cooperated completely (maybe because he is used to it). If you notice, pictures during that era never feature any smiles. Jack's expression is exactly what I was looking for.

This is the second wedding I have done for the Litchfield family. Great folks!! I wish you guys the greatest marriage.
This time of year is always great time of year in Cache Valley because the snow is melting and people start to remember that the sun does come out eventually. I used to work on the grounds crew at the Logan temple while I was going to school at USU. I know every plant, tree, and blade of grass intimately on the Logan temple grounds. Over by the "shop" we used to have a blackberry patch that we would raid about every other day so we could make blackberry shakes. We also had some peach trees that bore nice fruit. My buddy Lance used to take peaches home to his mom and she would turn them into peach pie. Lance was my good buddy, he joined the army while I was working there with him and has since been married (I shot his wedding) and served in Iraq as a Blackhawk pilot. I have nothing but good memories of working there. Anyway, pardon the reminiscing!

I think that the 60's destroyed this word so I am trying to resurrect it from its cliched graveyard. I am ever fascinated with individuals who possess this gift. My admiration forever goes towards the one who is the most unassuming and nonjudgmental. Above all qualities this is the one I desire the most. My wife is the best at it. I know of no one more loving than my wife. The other day I had a gentleman ask me with all sincerity if I robbed the cradle because my wife looks so young. I politely informed him that it was quite the contrary, she robbed the cradle. She is 10 months older than I but still gets pulled over for underaged driving. We got pulled over a few years ago while snowmobiling in Yellowstone. She was driving and I was on the back and the ranger thought that I was letting my child drive. We waited for ten minutes for him to verify that she indeed was in her late twenties. We have been married 8 years and have three kids. They are the best. Here is a pic of my wife, Melanie. She will be thrilled when she sees this.

All I have to say is that 70 degrees felt like an oven and I wanted to bake in it all day long. We came home through a snow storm on Saturday. I am usually too lazy to stop the car and get out to take pictures so the bottom picture of the mountains I took while driving 80 miles an hour and my wife holding the steering wheel.

We went up to a friends cabin up Daniel's Summit this weekend. It is always a good time. The kids had a blast sledding on the monster hill next to the cabin. We came home and my entire family is sick except Sami. We are pathetic. We watched like 10 movies yesterday because none of us can move. We are starting to stir a little today but not much.

I just got my second roll of film in today. I haven't shot black and white film in years. We used to buy 100 foot rolls of this stuff and stuff our own film canisters. I never trusted it. Anyway this is Hyde Park, Utah again. I had an itch to get out and shoot even though it was during that blizzard that swept through Utah last week. The little girl in the "Christmas Story" suit is my niece.

These were taken in a shoot I did telling the story of Hyde Park, Ut where my wife grew up. I shot both of these on film. I hadn't shot a roll of film in almost 4 years. In the early years I shot a Mamiya RB67 medium format and a Nikon n90s. There is definitely a magic to film. I am still waiting on some more to come back and I can't hardly sleep because I can't wait to see it.

Cache Valley is my true love! My dad grew up there and I have always had a nostalgic feeling about the whole valley. When I tell people of my love they say, "Oh but it is so cold up there!" As if it is warm in Salt Lake. When it is cold anywhere does anybody go outside anyway? If it is summer they say, "Oh it is beautiful up there!" There is a trade off anywhere you live even Hawaii. They don't get to experience the exquisite newness of spring. I would go through two winters to experience spring. Maybe. These images I took don't really help my case against it being cold in Cache Valley.

I was looking for a photo shoot I did in 2003 and I came across some old pics I shot with one of the first digital workhorses that came out the Kodak 760. I loved that camera. You almost had to wear a back brace to carry it around because of its weight but what a beauty.

These particular photos were taken in Logan Canyon up by Tony Grove. Cache Valley remains one of my favorite places on the planet.

My niece is featured in this photo. She thinks that I put chicken in my spaghetti sauce. It is really tuna. When I mention to people that tuna is used regularly in the authentic Italian diet they don't believe me(think Mediterranean). My wife forbade me to put tuna on pizza once when we had company coming over. This was hard for me to handle because for one I love tuna and for two I love to cook and the best time to experiment is when company is coming over. The pressure is on and you learn so much quicker! Let me know if you want any incredible tuna recipes. I am talking about fresh tuna, the steak kind not the can kind (although I do like albacore). I once read an article about a tuna that sold for $90,000 in Japan. This isn't carp folks.

I am going to miss shooting these guys! As you can see they are very easy to photograph. This was at the Mt. Timp temple. The weather was great. The videographer and I had a good time. His name is Matt and he owns Happily Ever After Video. He has shot there a lot more than I have and showed me some great shots. Thanks Matt!!

Sanpete County

This past weekend we went down to Sanpete County. For those of you who don’t know where it is think Ephraim, Manti, Moroni, Turkey country. I attended Snow College in Ephraim in 1995-1996. I had never heard of Snow College until my best friend recieved a scholarship for building construction for 1995. His highschool girlfriend’s dad was the “Woods” teacher at Bingham High School so Ivun figured it was in his best interest to become well acquainted with wood. So his first two classes in the morning were wood working. I had 3rd period English with him. One day he came to class and said he had just received a scholarship to Snow College and that all he had to do was raise his hand when the Snow College Rep asked if anybody wanted one (I think his girlfriend’s dad may had some part to play in it). Ivun asked me if I wanted to go. I said yes before I even knew where it was. I met my wife the first night down there. It was September 23, 1995. Ivun met his wife a little later. He saw her singing at an event and came home and told me that he was going to marry this girl that was singing. He had to break ties with his old girlfriend but low and behold they are married with 4 kids today and are here represented in this photo I took this weekend. What is unique about this photo is that it was taken on my friend Ted Dehaan’s 10 acre parcel of land in Mt. Pleasant. It is a beautiful spread. I have attached a picture of their home as well. We spent the night and went fishing and shooting in the morning. I caught a few mountain rainbows.

Saturday night we sent into Ephraim and Snow College and drove around remembering how much fun we had that year. It truly was the best year of my life. Ivun and I were roomates and we were very low on cash that year. I went and got my fishing license to bring home food for us. I used to go catch my limit at Urn Reservoir up Manti canyon. Unfortunately a limit of 6- 10 inch trout doesn’t feed many people. So Ivun went and got a deer tag and shot a deer. We stayed up till 5:00 am cutting up the meat on that thing. That fed us for a while. I think if you plan your life out too much you'll miss out on a lot of the adventures that happen with spontaneity. That decision to go to Snow College was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I could go on with many more details but it would bore you so I’ll just tell you we had a good time.

This is a photo of Brooke and Tyler, soon to be married. It has been great to get to know them better. They remind me a lot of my wife and I, just really easy going. I like this picture a lot because the background is a porta potty. Now that I say that you can probably see what it is by the color and a few of the shapes. I love making something out of nothing. Most of my time is spent making something out of nothing. I have to turn a mediocre environment into one that looks unique and like something out of a Martha Stewart magazine. This porta potty picture is a statement for me that I find is a reoccurring theme throughout my life which is that "you don't have to have a lot to be somebody" Many modern philosophers call it he HAVE-DO-BE syndrome. In other words you have to HAVE something in order to BE somebody. It is very subtle but it is a common theme in our generation. The reverse is BE-DO-HAVE. I am going to be somebody first and I will acquire later after I am somebody. Common Have-do-be thoughts are: "I will get in shape as soon as I HAVE a membership to the gym." Another is "I will be happy when I have some more money." It is always an outside force that they are looking for. The truth is they will never be happy and they will always be fat because the gym membership will get old in a couple months and money in and of itself does not give one happiness. So back to the porta potty. I make the best of my situation. Resources are all around me I just have to see them through a different set of glasses. I have trained about a half a dozen photographers and the ones who fail are still saying things like, "As soon as I get a new camera" or "I need a studio before I can be successful". Do not fool yourself. My first six months as a photographer I didn't even own a camera. Make it happen.

30 years old!!

In my family it is custom to announce to the world that it is your birthday. My mother is the queen of birthdays. It is not uncommon to pull up to her house on her July 8 birthday and see a sign in the window saying that it is her birthday. I am not joking when I tell you that my parents actually have a marque in their front window displaying such messages. Last year my mom wore a party hat that said, "It's my birthday!!" So I will take this opportunity to beller and cry to the world that tomorrow is my birthday. I will be a smooth 30 years old. It is a new beginning. This will be the best year of my life as have all the rest of them. I can't wait for this decade. My kids will grow tremendously, we will have some of the greatest times of our family in this decade. My BFF and I are going fishing at 4:30 am. That is all I want for my birthday is to catch my limit. Anyway, tomorrow will be a good day. Over and out!

I have been on cloud nine for 36 hours now ever since I went fishing to a local water hole of which I will not name and absolutely had the best fishing day of my life. My uncle Michael and his son Mason took me. At one point Mason brought in a nearly 5 pound rainbow whilst I pulled in about a 3 pounder. We cooked that one up for dinner tonight and it was THE best fresh water fish I have ever eaten. Anyway lately I have been really excited about what I consider family documentary style photography with style. Here is an image I took last week of my buddy Greg and his son playing basketball. I spent nearly 9 hours with his family last week and had a blast taking over 1500 images that they can have forever. What is more important than this? Greg is an awesome mentor to me. He wanted me to take these shots of him with his boys doing their alone time together. He spends most of his free time doing what his kids want. What a huge idea! Most parents spend 2 hours watching TV a day. He spends 2 hours a day with one of his four boys following their interests. Do you think they wonder if he cares about them? Do you think they will find meaning in this life? He has made me rethink the way I interact with my own children.
Anyway,the only sad part about this photo is that Greg missed the dunk.
